California Vans by Joe Stevens

Vans 4ever! What a flashback to my L.A.-trip in the 90's...

"Vans and the places where they were documents surviving custom and conversion vans across the West and examines the dialogue which exists between a van’s design aesthetic and that of its surrounding environment. Dionisio González

Dionisio González is an artist educated at different universities in Spain. In his most recent works, the artist takes a critical stance on the architecture and social culture of the favelas in the Brazilian megalópolis of São Paulo. He inserts new building structures into his photographs of the favelas via computer.
But Dionisio González is not only interested in the aesthetic aspect; his works also have a social facet. The artist is involved in a continuous discourse with the mayors' offices in the various favelas surrounding São Paulo, to find ways to transform some of the building structures he has designed into reality. Jan Henrik Hansen

My dear Zurich-based friend Jan Henrik Hansen is currently materialising a number of musical pieces or parts of them, including melodies, rhythms or even single sounds/chords for an exhibition in 2010. Above find a polyuretane sculpture translated from a bassline of five modulated notes. Music known to the author. Size 1.8 m in length. Henriks sculptures are translated from various musical pieces with custom tools invented and patented some years ago.

Julia Fullerton-Batten's Teen Stories

It is for her personal work in the field of fine art photography that UK-based Julia Fullerton-Batten (born in Bremen, Germany) is getting a reputation. In particular, the series entitled: Teen Stories. This series was developed out of Julia’s adoration for miniature villages.

Image Fulgurator by Julius von Bismarck

The Image Fulgurator is a device for physically manipulating photographs. It intervenes when a photo is being taken, without the photographer being able to detect anything. The manipulation is only visible on the photo afterwards. Got it?

Simon Høgsberg

Simon Høgsberg is a Danish photographer from Copenhagen. On his website a bunch of amazing projects are displayed, like 'We’re All Gonna Die - 100 Meters of Existence'. "This image is 100 meters long. There are 178 people in the picture, all shot in the course of 20 days from the same spot on a railroad bridge on Warschauer Strasse in Berlin in the summer 2007." In this interview Simon talks about the title, his his used gear and work proceeding. Simon: "Currently I’m in the process of preparing to exhibit the 100 meter photograph in its full length (100 m x 78 cm) in a public square in Copenhagen in the month of May 2009."

Timo Stammberger: Underground Landscapes

Berlin-based photographer Timo Stammberger graduated in 2009 from the Ostkreuzschule for Photography. Timo says about his 'Underground Landscapes' series: "The tunnel´s architecture, which stems from its purely functional purpose, creates a special and intense atmosphere. The French anthropologist Marc Augé wrote about 'Non-Places': »The space of the non-resort creates no particular identity, and no special relation, but loneliness and similarity.«" (timostammberger.com)

Joël Tettamanti

Swiss photographer Joël Tettamanti studied visual communication and photography at the Ecole Cantonale d'art Lausanne (ECAL) from 1997 to 2001. Since then he participated in numerous exhibitions and was included in many publications in Switzerland and abroad.
The photo above is an untitled image from the studies 'Ilulissat, Greenland' from 2008. Until May 17th the exhibition of Joël's project 'Local Studies', which is continuously expanded since 2006, can be visited at the Fotostiftung Schweiz in Winterthur.

Things I have learned in my life so far

Sagmeister Inc. is a graphic design company in New York City. Stefan Sagmeister started a project based on a list in his diary where he wrote down things he has learned in his life so far. For example, after running a charity project for homeless in NYC for three years, Sagmeister learned "Starting a charity is surprisingly easy, running a charity is surprisingly hard". There is also a book published, consisting of 15 unbound signatures in a laser-cut slipcase. For this project, Sagmeister won the Leadaward 2008.

Huaxi City Centre

MAD is a Beijing-based architectural design studio dedicated to creating innovative projects. MAD recently organised a collaborative masterplanning project in South West China. 11 young international architects were invited to carry out an urban experiment: to design the city centre of Huaxi. The architects invited by MAD included: Atelier Manferdini, BIG, Dieguez Fridman, Emergent/Tom Wiscombe, Houliang Architecture, JDS, MAD, Mass Studies, Rojkind Arquitectos, Serie, Sou Fujimoto architects. The masterplan was developed by Shanghai Tongji urban planning and design institute, Studio 6, together with MAD. The following visualisation of one of the proposed buildings is a design of argentinian architect Dieguez Fridman.

Kibera photo graffiti project

JR is a 25-year-old Parisian (from Tunisian and Eastern European parents), living in a middle-class background. He describes himself as a graffiti artist, but started taking photographs when he found a camera on the Paris metro as a 17-year-old. He is now, in his own words, a hybrid 'photograffeur', who pastes enormous black-and-white photographic canvases of eyes and noses and mouths in various urban environments.
JR has just returned from Kenya, where he and his 10 unpaid assistants transformed Kibera, one of Africa’s biggest slums, into a vast exhibition space. They plastered the people's portraits on train carriages and on the roofs of their houses. (Text: designboom)

TCHO chocolate

"How do you make a chocolate company? Be obsessed. Be very, very obsessed." TCHO is a new chocolate company from San Francisco with a focus on "obsessively good dark chocolate" and a Fair Trade background, founded by the experienced chocolatier Timothy Childs and the co-founder of Wired magazine, Louis Rossetto.
The Corporate Design was created by Susanna Dulkinys, Partner at Edenspiekermann in Berlin.
