Neue Menschen

Neue Menschen: a fascinating book about youth by the highly talented Zurich photographers Rico Scagliola & Michael Meier (posted before @Shotspot), who love to portrait themselves in their dairy. The book was layouted by Zurich-Bale-based graphic design agency A  F  R  I  K  A.

"For two and a half years Rico Scagliola and Michael Meier took pictures and filmed teenagers, creating an archive of photographs and videos. Neue Menschen (New Human Beings) provides a glimpse into this project.

Teenagers today are the first generation to grow up with the picture-worlds of the Internet. Platforms of self-presentation such as Myspace and Facebook are a normal part of life to them. They learn at a young age how to present themselves in pictures. Meier and Scagliola use the young people’s visual sophistication and skilled self-presentation, integrating the projected pictures and fantasies into their own cosmos of images. The document and its presentation become one and the same. Neue Menschen offers an unusual view into a world in which pictures and life are intertwined ever-more closely—the home of digital natives. Neue Menschen presents views inside this brave new world in which the classical interests of youth and pop culture find a contemporary expression—sex and longing, perfection and reality, beauty and the abyss." ewz.selection 2010

ewz.selection, the Swiss platform for contemporary photography, awards the eighteen best photographic works of the year this coming weekend. The exhibition with opening night party, panel discussions, sofa talks, pictures soirées, workshops and live shootings makes the ewz-eventhall a vibrant meeting place for photo lovers.

ewz.selection will be celebrating its 10th birthday with new photo prizes and the exhibition catalogue "Bilderwahn" newly designed by Tania Prill and Alberto Vieceli.

Sodapix and DruckLive present a one-day pre-Christmas Exhibition of the photographer Raphael Yoshitomi in the arcade of Zürich's Helmhaus.

Raphael Yoshitomi is an artist who traps life and at the same time frees the frozen moment. Whether from a bird's eye perspective or from street level, his protagonists are captured - and together we observe, however we don't feel as a part of the observed. Raphael Yoshitomi is a master of the heat of the moment, his photographs seem to be formally staged, however by longer observation they turn out to be curiously-real and we become the silent witnesses. People become like props, populating the photographs and obeying a larger plan that is chaotically structured.

uns ich er

uns ich er: is a new book from the linguist Beat Gloor, designed by Zurich-based designbureau Prill-Vieceli. The book is about word breaks, you can read the German words in two ways. The design of the book is kept simple with black letters on white paper, format A4 - which is suitable to the content. Great design, great book - you have to "read" it!

der:die:das: is a brandnew monothematic magazine made in Zurich, which examines items, objects and various „things“ from everyday life. Next to their meaning in everyday life the items will be put in an art- and design-discourse, in order to reveal the bizzare and the established all at once.
der:die:das: assembles the various perceptions of different disciplines in art and design by various artists, designers and authors in one magazine. According to the alphabet the things will be selected, dissected and analysed. The first issue will start with the letter A for apple.

Jan Henrik Hansen

My dear Zurich-based friend Jan Henrik Hansen is currently materialising a number of musical pieces or parts of them, including melodies, rhythms or even single sounds/chords for an exhibition in 2010. Above find a polyuretane sculpture translated from a bassline of five modulated notes. Music known to the author. Size 1.8 m in length. Henriks sculptures are translated from various musical pieces with custom tools invented and patented some years ago.

Ester Vonplon: winner of the Swiss Photo Award 2009

Swiss photographer and former skateboarder Ester Vonplon, born 1980 in Switzerland and living in Berlin, is the winner of the Swiss Photo Award 2009. Her grainy and atmospheric black-and-white photographs of a village in Kosovo convinced the jury. An interview with Ester about this Kosovo project is published here. Further prize winners are Jonathan Heyer, Andri Pol, Vanessa Püntener and Roger Eberhard. The exhibition can be seen until May 17th at ewz Selnau in Zürich.

Yesterday the 'vfg Nachwuchsförderpreis' (Swiss award for young photographers) was awarded. Sodagrapher Ueli Alder was one of the nominees, the 2009 winner is Sophie Brasey, born 1985 and just finished ECAL. The exhibition will be shown until May 21th at BINZ39 in Zürich.

ED-Awards / ED-Festival 2009

The ED-Awards (European Design Awards) is the comprehensive annual awards organization acknowledging the best of graphic design, illustration and multimedia design in Europe. Last year's award winner in the category magazine was Netherlands-based agency Lesley Moore with 'MARK', an inspiring architecture mag.
The ED-Festival 2009 takes place in Zurich and will include the ED-Conference (15-17th May), the ED-Award ceremony (17th May), several Design Walks and other design events. The program is published here.

The printing house Seltmann from Lüdenscheid/Germany produces extravagant books & catalogues and awards advertising photos for the 4th time. C/O Berlin, The Cultural Forum for Photography, shows the 'geschossen + gedruckt' ('shot + printed') exhibition between April 18th and May 17th, 2009. Opening and award presentation will be held on April 18th, 2009.

Good Design, Good Business

The J. R. Geigy A.G. chemical concern was the starting point for a great moment in the history of Swiss graphic art and advertising. "Research for tomorrow" – the former Basle-based company also lived up to this forward-looking slogan in its communication: its design was intended to increase sales of products "made in Switzerland". The exhibition 'Good Design, Good Business' from 4.2. – 24.5.2009 at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich is the first comprehensive show of this important Swiss contribution to the history of design, presenting works from well-known Swiss designers like Gottfried Honegger, Max Schmid, Herbert Leupin and Karl Gestner. 'Corporate Diversity – Schweizer Grafik und Werbung für Geigy 1940-1970' is the well designed publication accompanying the exhibition, edited by Karin Gimmi, Andres Janser, Barbara Junod, R. Roger Remington and Yvonne Zimmermann. Design by norm.

Tilt-Shift-Maker

"Tilt-shift photography refers to the use of camera movements on small- and medium format cameras. Miniature faking is a post-processing technique, which involves selectively blurring a photo to simulate the narrow depth of field found in macro photography and some tilt-shift photography, making the image appear to be of a miniature model." Martin Parr: Luxury

Zurich gallery Nicola von Senger will host a Martin Parr exhibition from 07.02.09 to 21.03.09. Fuhrimann & Hächler architects

Stunning residential building in Zurich by Fuhrimann & Hächler architects from 2005. The task was to create reasonably-priced residential space with high standards of living comfort for four differently sized parties. In the processs, each party was to profit as much as possible on the one hand from the south-facing environs, and on the other from the north-facing view of the city. This is no brand-new architectural news, but I've visited this building recently for the first time. Besides, another good example of presenting architecture with a very nice vintage car, a Citroën SM from 1972 with a Maserati V6 engine. Picture found at jetzt.de, unfortunately without a reference to the photographer. If anybody knows, please write a comment.
