ewz.selection 2010



ewz.selection, the Swiss platform for contemporary photography, awards the eighteen best photographic works of the year this coming weekend. The exhibition with opening night party, panel discussions, sofa talks, pictures soirées, workshops and live shootings makes the ewz-eventhall a vibrant meeting place for photo lovers.
ewz.selection will be celebrating its 10th birthday with new photo prizes and the exhibition catalogue "Bilderwahn" newly designed by Tania Prill and Alberto Vieceli.

gute aussichten – junge deutsche fotografie is a project set up in 2004 as a private initiative in support of talented young photographers. The core element of the project is an annual competition for final portfolios submitted to all German universities, universities of applied sciences and academies offering a course of study in photography. The exhibition gute aussichten 2009/2010 at Marta Museum in Herford is shown until January 10th 2010.

Hey, Hot Shot! competition 2009

Jen Bekman Projects is happy to announce the opening of the 2009 Second Edition Hey, Hot Shot! competition. Entries will be accepted now through Friday, October 23rd, 2009. All entrants have their work reviewed by top-shelf panelists and enjoy the potential to be promoted online on the Hey, Hot Shot! blog, selected for 20x200 and exhibited in their New York gallery.
The five photographers who won the 2008 competition were Yijun Liao, John Mann, Cara Phillips, Hosang Park and Donald Weber.

With 'Die Macht der Bilder', German photographer Markus Georg won ‘Gute Aussichten’, a photography thesis contest. Markus wants us to think about the power of well-known images like Stonehenge. The ‘Gute Aussichten’ exhibition at DZ Bank in Frankfurt is shown until July 10th 2009.

Ester Vonplon: winner of the Swiss Photo Award 2009





Swiss photographer and former skateboarder Ester Vonplon, born 1980 in Switzerland and living in Berlin, is the winner of the Swiss Photo Award 2009. Her grainy and atmospheric black-and-white photographs of a village in Kosovo convinced the jury. An interview with Ester about this Kosovo project is published here. Further prize winners are Jonathan Heyer, Andri Pol, Vanessa Püntener and Roger Eberhard. The exhibition can be seen until May 17th at ewz Selnau in Zürich.

Yesterday the 'vfg Nachwuchsförderpreis' (Swiss award for young photographers) was awarded. Sodagrapher Ueli Alder was one of the nominees, the 2009 winner is Sophie Brasey, born 1985 and just finished ECAL. The exhibition will be shown until May 21th at BINZ39 in Zürich.

James Clar








Media artist James Clar creates art by visualising technology in a new way. He "has been recognized by numerous publications such as Architectural Lighting, Mark, Axis, IdN, including being awarded the 'Design Distinction Award' by I.D. Magazine 2004 for his thesis project done at New York University’s Interactive Telecommunication’s Program." (jamesclar.com)

Peter Franck



Germany-based photographer Peter Franck has won several awards like the 'Canon ProFashional Award'. Now Peter was recently awarded second place with some remarkable pictures at 'Sony World Photography Awards' in the category Advertising. ED-Awards / ED-Festival 2009



The ED-Awards (European Design Awards) is the comprehensive annual awards organization acknowledging the best of graphic design, illustration and multimedia design in Europe. Last year's award winner in the category magazine was Netherlands-based agency Lesley Moore with 'MARK', an inspiring architecture mag.
The ED-Festival 2009 takes place in Zurich and will include the ED-Conference (15-17th May), the ED-Award ceremony (17th May), several Design Walks and other design events. The program is published here.

The printing house Seltmann from Lüdenscheid/Germany produces extravagant books & catalogues and awards advertising photos for the 4th time. C/O Berlin, The Cultural Forum for Photography, shows the 'geschossen + gedruckt' ('shot + printed') exhibition between April 18th and May 17th, 2009. Opening and award presentation will be held on April 18th, 2009.
Above image is the winning photo from geschossen + gedruckt 2007 in the 'Product in Use' category by Zurich photographer Gabi Vogt. The image was shot during an 'Artist in Residence' stay in Romania and shows a Dacia hulk.

VisualLeader / LeadAwards 2009

Things I have learned in my life so far










Sagmeister Inc. is a graphic design company in New York City. Stefan Sagmeister started a project based on a list in his diary where he wrote down things he has learned in his life so far. For example, after running a charity project for homeless in NYC for three years, Sagmeister learned "Starting a charity is surprisingly easy, running a charity is surprisingly hard". There is also a book published, consisting of 15 unbound signatures in a laser-cut slipcase. For this project, Sagmeister won the Leadaward 2008.

Festival of Visual Arts in Vevey



From January 2009, as part of Images, the Festival of Visual Arts in Vevey, Switzerland, the Foundation 'Vevey: Ville d’Images' is inviting entries for the 5th European First Film Awards and the 7th International Vevey Photo Awards. Register online to the photography or cinema competition. The deadline for the submission of projects is April 30th 2009.

Horse paradise Island



German photographer Ina Johanna Gecke has been dreaming from "horse paradise" Island since her younger days. She finally visited the most happy horses of the world and produced a stunning portrait series, published as "portfolio of the month" in GEO.de.
