Guido Mocafico - Guns and Roses

"Guns and Roses, Guido Mocafico's second solo exhibition at Bernheimer Fine Art Photography, unites two bodies of work; Gunsdating from 2006 - 2008 and Roses, 2009. Combined, the two series Guns and Roses, raise interesting parallels; technology versus the natural, war versus love, fear versus pleasure - but in both, Mocafico examines mans intervention with nature. Of Italian descent, Mocafico was born in Switzerland in 1962 and currently lives and works in Paris." (photography-now.com)

Seems familiar? We are constantly bombarded by images and information – at school, at work, in newspapers and on the web. All of these stimuli carry a multitude of underlying codes. Day in and day out, we navigate our way, more or less successfully, through a torrent of texts and images, subtle advertising messages and hard facts, official instructions and personal messages. New and long-established media alike vie for our undivided attention. What we tend to overlook is the fact that we are increasingly subject to a second, media-dominated reality in which we are no longer directly involved.
The exhibition KARAOKE – Photographic Quotes with works by Becky Beasley (GB), Thomas Galler (CH), Aneta Grzeszykowska (PL), Thomas Julier (CH), Anja Manfredi (A), Ryan McGinley (USA), Taiyo Onorato / Nico Krebs (CH/CH), Clunie Reid (GB) and Oliver Sieber (D) quietly flags up the relationships and juxtapositions that permeate our casual, everyday navigation of parallel worlds. Good Design, Good Business

Markus Löw, 'Acaralate 2E Geigy', ca. 1967, Photo: Museum für Gestaltung Zürich, Umberto Romito © ZHdK

The J. R. Geigy A.G. chemical concern was the starting point for a great moment in the history of Swiss graphic art and advertising. "Research for tomorrow" – the former Basle-based company also lived up to this forward-looking slogan in its communication: its design was intended to increase sales of products "made in Switzerland". The exhibition 'Good Design, Good Business' from 4.2. – 24.5.2009 at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich is the first comprehensive show of this important Swiss contribution to the history of design, presenting works from well-known Swiss designers like Gottfried Honegger, Max Schmid, Herbert Leupin and Karl Gestner. More pictures can be found here at werbewoche.ch.
'Corporate Diversity – Schweizer Grafik und Werbung für Geigy 1940-1970' is the well designed publication accompanying the exhibition, edited by Karin Gimmi, Andres Janser, Barbara Junod, R. Roger Remington and Yvonne Zimmermann. Design by norm.
