Braun flickr set

Marvellous flickr set of Braun products. Flickr-member photonium collected these objects from flea markets, the b&w pictures are taken in the munich design museum. The design of Braun products, most of them created by Dieter Rams who worked as product designer for Braun from 1955 until his retirement in 1998, has influenced several generations of designers.
The iPhone's calculator app is an obvious tribute to the 1977 Braun ET44 and ET66 calculators.

Wang Qingsong

X-Large photo by Wang Qingsong. "Dressed as a teacher, Wang stands in front of a blackboard covered in Chinese and English characters and graphics. While Nike and McDonald’s logos hint at the current wave of Westernization and democratization, the text in the middle of the board - “Let China walks towards the world! Let the world learn about China!” - suggests something much deeper. On the surface an expression of adulation for the developed world, it also raises the question of who, in this new century, will do the leading." (kunstaspekte.de)

Hamster Shredding

Tom Ballhatchet studied Industrial Design at London based Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. He made my day with his 'Hamster Shredding' project.
"A hamster runs on his wheel, powering a shredder that shreds your unwanted documents into his bedding. Because micro generation is the future and everyone is responsible."

Good Design, Good Business

Markus Löw, 'Acaralate 2E Geigy', ca. 1967, Photo: Museum für Gestaltung Zürich, Umberto Romito © ZHdK

The J. R. Geigy A.G. chemical concern was the starting point for a great moment in the history of Swiss graphic art and advertising. "Research for tomorrow" – the former Basle-based company also lived up to this forward-looking slogan in its communication: its design was intended to increase sales of products "made in Switzerland". The exhibition 'Good Design, Good Business' from 4.2. – 24.5.2009 at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich is the first comprehensive show of this important Swiss contribution to the history of design, presenting works from well-known Swiss designers like Gottfried Honegger, Max Schmid, Herbert Leupin and Karl Gestner. More pictures can be found here at werbewoche.ch.
'Corporate Diversity – Schweizer Grafik und Werbung für Geigy 1940-1970' is the well designed publication accompanying the exhibition, edited by Karin Gimmi, Andres Janser, Barbara Junod, R. Roger Remington and Yvonne Zimmermann. Design by norm.

Levi Wedel

Beautiful night shots from Levi Wedel, a photographer from Calgary/Canada. Levi writes about this 'Invisible City' series that the pictures "depict New Topographic directives to a terminal extreme. Structures dominate and overshadow the natural landscape they are forged from, vegetation is absent apart from that which is humanly sanctioned and controlled, and even the light is completely artificial." More series from Levi can be seen here on Flickr.
