London darkrooms

Richard Nicholson about his series of Londons last professional darkrooms:
"1979 was the year my father constructed a darkroom and introduced me to photography. I was immediately entranced by the printing process, and I cherished the long hours spent in this dark, silent, private space. Ever since the darkroom has been integral to my work as a photographer. But for how much longer?
Labs are closing their doors - Joe’s Basement, Primary, Metro Clerkenwell, Metro Soho have all gone. Polaroid has stopped making instant film. Clients are demanding the immediate feedback of digital photography. This project, shot on 4″x 5″film, documents London’s remaining professional darkrooms."

Movie poster remix

Olly Moss, born 1987 in the UK, is an outstanding designer and illustrator. His minimalistic movie poster remixes strip to the essential content of the films. My favourite is The Deer Hunter.

jĭng

jĭng studied photography from 2002-2007 at School of Visual Arts, New York and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honors. With shiny-eyed optimism and close interaction with everyday people, jĭng combines his eye for subtle gestures and expressions with a tropical color palette and the classical formality of the tableau, instilling the colorful character of his subjects in his images. Utilizing a healthy dose of kitsch and humor to disarm viewers' expectations, jĭng explores the social instinct of people to form communities and identities, exploring cultural quirks and cultural stereotypes along the way. Polaroid relaunch

If all goes to plan, the Polaroid factory in Enschede, the Netherlands, will soon be making film again thanks to its new owner, an eccentric Austrian artist and businessman named Florian Kaps. Mr Kaps, 39, has dedicated the past five years to instant photography. He set up Polanoid.net, the biggest Polaroid gallery on the web, and the first ever Polaroid-only art gallery in Vienna, called Polanoir. (Text: Smile! Polaroid is saved, Article from The Independent)

Fuhrimann & Hächler architects

Stunning residential building in Zurich by Fuhrimann & Hächler architects from 2005. The task was to create reasonably-priced residential space with high standards of living comfort for four differently sized parties. In the processs, each party was to profit as much as possible on the one hand from the south-facing environs, and on the other from the north-facing view of the city. (Text: archdaily.com, more informations and pictures are to be found there)
This is no brand-new architectural news, but I've visited this building recently for the first time. Besides, another good example of presenting architecture with a very nice vintage car, a Citroën SM from 1972 with a Maserati V6 engine. Picture found at jetzt.de, unfortunately without a reference to the photographer. If anybody knows, please write a comment.

No Pants! Subway Ride

On Saturday January 10th 2009 is the 8th annual 'No Pants! Subway Ride'. Last year nearly 2'000 people took off their pants on subways in 10 cities around the world, most of them in NYC where Improv Everywhere started this event in 2002. Would be cool to see this also in currently frozen Zürich...
Improv Everywhere causes scenes of chaos and joy in public places. Created in August of 2001 by Charlie Todd, Improv Everywhere has executed over 70 missions involving thousands of undercover agents. The group is based in New York City.

Amelia’s World

'Amelia’s World' is an impressive series of Robin Schwartz, the pictures are published here in Women in Photography.
"My photographs are drawn from real journeys undertaken with my daughter, Amelia. I am driven to depict relationships with animals but the photographs are not documents; they are evidence of the invented worlds that we explore and the fables we enact together. Photography gives us the opportunity to access our dreams, to discover the extraordinary." (Robin Schwartz)
